Binduri MP hopes for lasting peace in Bawku

The Member of Parliament for Binduri, Issifu Mahmoud, is hopeful. He believes the ongoing mediation process will bring peace to Bawku.

Mr. Mahmoud spoke on the JoyNews AM Show about the peace talks. These talks began yesterday at the Manhyia Palace. Various factions involved in the Bawku conflict are participating.

Otumfuo Osei Tutu II is leading these mediation efforts. The goal is to find a lasting resolution to years of violence.

This renewed push for peace follows President John Mahama’s support for Otumfuo's leadership. The government aims to restore calm and unity in the Upper East Region.

Mr. Mahmoud explained that past efforts have failed to address root causes of violence. Although there have been periods of peace, they lacked measures for long-term stability.

He stated, “The Bawku conflict has remained because we have not solved it.” He emphasized that without sufficient measures, peace cannot be maintained.

“Even when we experience periods of peace, something disrupts it,” he added. This cycle of conflict continues to affect the region.

Mr. Mahmoud stressed that finding a permanent solution is crucial. Temporary fixes from the past have not worked.

“We need a lasting solution,” he said firmly. He believes this is why the government referred the matter to Otumfuo for mediation.

“I am confident that this Otumfuo-led mediation will bring lasting peace,” he concluded.
