Dr. Palgrave Boakye-Danquah, a former Government Spokesperson, has criticized Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia. He accuses Bawumia of trying to avoid responsibility for the NPP's defeat in the December 7, 2024 elections.
During his Thank You Tour, Dr. Bawumia pointed out several reasons for the NPP's loss. He mentioned arrogance in governance and a rising cost of living. He also cited the refusal to reshuffle ministers and the unpopular Electronic Transfer Levy (E-Levy). Additionally, he referred to the controversial “haircut” policy from the IMF debt restructuring.
Dr. Bawumia believes these issues caused economic hardship for many Ghanaians. However, Dr. Boakye-Danquah dismissed his explanations as an attempt to evade accountability.
He stated that as Vice President, Bawumia had opportunities to voice dissent or influence policy but did not do so. Now, he claims opposition only when it benefits his political ambitions.
Dr. Boakye-Danquah also accused Bawumia of distancing himself from the Domestic Debt Exchange Programme (DDEP). This program caused significant financial strain and led to protests by pensioners.
“Bawumia’s failure to address DDEP’s impact shows opportunism,” he said. It undermines collective accountability within the administration.
Furthermore, Dr. Boakye-Danquah criticized Bawumia for shifting blame onto President Akufo-Addo. He highlighted severe economic hardships like high living costs and rising petrol prices before the election.
“His attempt to blame Akufo-Addo is particularly disloyal,” he concluded.
