Dr. Titus Beyuo, a member of the Parliamentary Health Committee, has issued a warning. He cautioned parents against bleaching their children's skin to make it lighter.
He highlighted serious health risks linked to this practice. Children who are bleached may face severe medical issues.
His warning comes after an investigation by JoyNews and Nigeria Health Watch. The report revealed that some parents use various substances for skin bleaching. They believe light-skinned individuals are more socially accepted than those with dark skin.
Dr. Beyuo explained that skin bleaching can harm brain development in children. It may also lead to other serious health problems.
He stated, "That child may not grow optimally." He added that children could experience brain development challenges and water retention issues.
Additionally, they might suffer from muscle pain and become very lean. Hypertension can also occur in children, which is often thought to affect only adults.
Dr. Beyuo emphasized the long-term consequences of hypertension in young people. He warned it could lead to kidney failure and cancer.
He called for strict enforcement of existing laws banning these harmful creams nationwide. Dr. Beyuo also warned medical and herbal practitioners selling these products in Ghanaian markets.
