BoG to begin cryptocurrency regulation in Ghana by September 2025

The Bank of Ghana (BoG) Governor, Dr. Johnson Asiama, announced new regulations for cryptocurrency. The central bank plans to start this by September 2025.

He spoke at the African Leaders and Partners Forum in Washington, D.C. This event was part of the IMF/World Bank Spring Meetings. The regulation depends on passing the Virtual Asset Providers Act.

This act will allow the Bank of Ghana to license and regulate virtual asset platforms. Dr. Asiama mentioned that a dedicated unit for digital assets is being established.

He stated, “This is a technology we cannot prevent.” He emphasized the need to regulate it quickly.

The forum gathered stakeholders from finance, trade, and agriculture across various regions. They discussed strategies to improve trade and investment between Africa and the U.S.

Earlier, Dr. James Klutse from the Securities and Exchange Commission shared updates on cryptocurrency regulations. He spoke on PM Express Business Edition about their progress in creating a regulatory framework.

In January 2018, the Bank of Ghana warned Ghanaians about cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin. They stated these currencies are not recognized under Ghanaian law.

The central bank advised caution when dealing with crypto institutions. They also urged financial institutions not to facilitate cryptocurrency transactions.

At the forum, Dr. Asiama stressed macroeconomic credibility's importance for investor confidence. He outlined four key proposals from BoG to reshape U.S.-Africa engagement.

Policies are being implemented to stabilize inflation and build reserves. Central banks across Africa are adopting reforms for better transparency and independence.

Dr. Asiama highlighted fostering financial resilience as crucial for attracting capital flows. He also noted the need for effective risk mitigation strategies to manage vulnerabilities.
