Legal practitioner Bobby Banson has called for urgent reforms. He wants to protect the judiciary's integrity amid rising political tensions. These tensions stem from the potential removal of Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo.
On JoyNews’ Newsfile, Mr. Banson expressed his concerns. He believes the current process is becoming a political “ping pong.” This involves the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the National Democratic Congress (NDC).
Banson stated, “This issue with the Chief Justice should lead to reforms.” He warned that without changes, the judiciary could be damaged by political games.
He noted that increasing polarization threatens judicial independence and public trust. Without legal reforms, allegations of misconduct could be misused for political gain.
Meanwhile, Frank Davies, Director of Legal Affairs for the NPP, shared his concerns. He described ongoing processes regarding Chief Justice Torkornoo as politicized.
Speaking on Newsfile, Mr. Davies cautioned about undermining Ghana’s legal framework. He emphasized that while there are constitutional provisions for removal, handling this issue poorly risks democratic stability.
Davies clarified that removing a Chief Justice isn’t inherently problematic. The real issue lies in how the process is approached and presented to the public.
“It’s not about removing a Chief Justice,” he said. “It’s about ensuring a valid basis for such actions.”
