The Bono Regional Women Organizers of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) are urging President John Dramani Mahama to appoint Hajia Fatimatu Abubakari as the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) for Berekum East.
They shared their concerns at a press conference at the Berekum East Zongo Caucus office. The twelve Constituency Women Organizers emphasized Hajia Fatima’s loyalty and contributions to the NDC's growth in the region.
They noted her key role in helping the party win 11 out of 12 parliamentary seats in the area. They warned that sidelining her could demoralize the party’s base, especially among women.
Hajia Fatimatu's hard work helped the NDC capture the Berekum East seat, which had been difficult since Mr. Owusu Acheampong's tenure. Despite being in opposition, she became the Presiding Member of the Assembly and earned respect from various political backgrounds.
Salamatu Adams, Acting Women's Organizer of Concerned Assembly Members of Ghana (CAMG), questioned why women organizers from other regions received significant positions while Hajia Fatimatu faced resistance for MCE.
The Bono NDC women also expressed concerns about a candidate linked to a former NPP MP for Sunyani West. They cautioned that this could threaten the party’s stability and control over Berekum East.
The women appealed to President Mahama, Vice President, and First Lady to show commitment to women's empowerment. They stressed that promises to uplift women should not just be campaign rhetoric.
