Torrential rains are hitting parts of the Bono Region. The National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) has identified 78 flood-prone areas. They are taking steps to protect lives and property.
This renewed focus on disaster prevention follows a tragic incident in Sunyani. A 3-year-old boy lost his life after falling into an open drain during heavy rain. This happened in the Abetifi Electoral Area of Sunyani East Municipality.
Fati Keni, the Bono Regional NADMO Director, spoke to Citi News on May 20. She highlighted the urgency of the situation, noting many communities are vulnerable. Public education is crucial to reduce casualties during the rainy season.
NADMO teams will raise awareness in high-risk areas. Keni stated, “We have 78 flood-prone areas within the region.” In Sunyani, places like New Town and New Doma are particularly affected.
She emphasized that communication is key this season. NADMO will engage with local communities about safety measures during heavy rains.
