Bosome Freho: Police allege some teachers are secretly fueling drug abuse in schools

Police in Bosome Freho, Ashanti Region, report that some teachers are allegedly selling drugs to students. This is happening without the knowledge of school authorities.

The police say this contributes to rising drug abuse among students.

District Police Commander ASP Fatawu Zakaria finds the situation deeply troubling. He calls for urgent action to address this issue.

“It is sad that some teachers facilitate drug use,” he said. “Some are selling drugs on our campuses.”

ASP Zakaria noted that some teachers know about these activities but do not report them. Reports often go to education directors who handle issues diplomatically.

“This is criminal,” he stressed. He urged teachers to report such activities directly to the police.

“Please come to the police station,” he appealed. He advised reporting directly to the police commander for confidentiality and safety.

“Don’t report at the counter; I can’t guarantee your safety,” he emphasized. This ensures protection from possible retaliation against reporting teachers.

He made these remarks at the 7th Quadrennial District Delegates’ Conference of GNAT in Asiwa, where new district executives were elected.

However, GNAT District Chairman Daniel Acheamfour refuted these claims. He stated no incidents of drug sales or threats have been reported in the district.

“We have not recorded any cases of students threatening teachers,” Mr. Acheamfour said. “Absenteeism is what we often deal with here.”

He urged teachers to avoid any misconduct and remain committed to professionalism and integrity in student development.

Regarding teacher safety, ASP Zakaria warned about increasing student attacks on educators in some areas.

He explained that three elements must be present for a crime: an attractive target (like a mobile phone), a motivated offender (often under drug influence), and a convenient location.

“Those using drugs will strike at convenient times and places,” he cautioned. Teachers should avoid situations that could expose them to danger.

Chairman Acheamfour also appealed for government support through a "deprived area allowance." This would incentivize teachers working in under-resourced areas like Bosome Freho.

“When this is done, more teachers will accept postings there,” he said, improving teaching and learning conditions.
