Brace for more taxes under Mahama – Bawumia warns Ghanaians

Former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has issued a warning to Ghanaians. He cautioned them to prepare for higher taxes under John Dramani Mahama's administration.

His warning follows the recent approval of the Energy Sector Levy (Amendment) Bill on June 3, 2025. This new law increases petroleum product levies by GH₵1. It is expected to generate GH₵5.7 billion in revenue.

Finance Minister Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson explained that these funds are needed urgently. They will help address the growing debt in the energy sector. The levy proceeds will be used to buy essential fuel for power generation.

He emphasized that stable electricity supply depends on this funding. Current electricity tariffs do not cover fuel costs for power generation. The government also needs an additional $1.2 billion for thermal power fuel in 2025.

During a thank-you tour in the Central Region, Dr. Bawumia spoke to NPP supporters. He warned them about a tough tax regime under Mahama's leadership. He mentioned a new "dumsor levy," which he claims is eight times the E-Levy.

For example, if you buy fuel for GH₵1000, you will pay GH₵83 as dumsor levy. He urged everyone to prepare for more tax increases ahead.
