Brig. Gen. Annan to tackle illicit trade as new Commissioner of Customs

Brig. Gen. Annan is the new Commissioner of the Customs Division at GRA. He aims to strengthen the government's fight against illicit trade and organized crime. His appointment highlights a renewed focus on these issues in Ghana.

Illicit trade undermines legitimate businesses and harms consumer safety. It also deprives the country of vital revenue. Ghana faces challenges like cocoa smuggling, illegal gold mining, and tax evasion.

Felix Kwakye Ofosu, the President’s spokesman, praised Brig. Gen. Annan as dedicated and principled. He stated that Annan will help reset the Customs Division to meet economic targets.

Brig. Gen. Annan succeeds Brig. Gen. Ziblim Ayorrogo, who achieved significant revenue growth during his tenure. Under Ayorrogo, Customs collected GH¢152.977 billion, exceeding its target for 2024.

The new Commissioner commended his predecessor's leadership and plans to build on it. He will focus on institutional excellence and improving border security.

Political analyst Richard Kasu congratulated Brig. Gen. Annan on his appointment. He noted that illicit trade harms government revenue and stifles innovation.

Kasu believes this appointment is a crucial step toward effective customs administration in Ghana. The Government of Ghana fully supports Brigadier General Annan’s leadership and goals.

They call for collaboration among public and private sectors to protect Ghana’s economy and support local industries.
