The British High Commission has announced the winners of the fourth annual Ambassador for a Day (AfD) competition. This initiative empowers young women to take on leadership roles and advocate for women's rights.
This year, the event partnered with several organizations. These include the Barbados High Commission, the Italian Embassy, and the UK-Ghana Chamber of Commerce. Other partners are Omni Group of Companies and Cyndex Limited.
Winners will spend a day with Female Heads of Missions and Female CEOs. They will also engage in mentorship activities for the first time.
The six winners are:
- Fafali Dorgbetor (British High Commissioner)
- Emelia Yaabi (Barbados High Commissioner)
- Miriam Nasigri (Italian Ambassador)
- Issahaku Barichisu (UK-Ghana Chamber of Commerce Executive Director)
- Deborah Jonah (Omni Group Managing Director)
- Nafisa Osman (Cyndex Limited CEO)
These winners will act as Ambassadors and Corporate Executives for a Day. They will receive soft skills training to enhance their leadership abilities.
For next year's AfD competition, several mentors have been confirmed. They include Harriet Thompson, Juliette Bynoe-Sutherland, Laura Ranalli, Adjoba Kyiamah, Pamela Zormelo, and Cynthia Johanna Baffour.
At the Awards Ceremony, British High Commissioner Harriet Thompson congratulated the winners. She emphasized that this program builds ambition for future female leaders. Investing in women is crucial for Ghana's development.
Thompson noted that Ghana is making progress toward gender equality. The Affirmative Action Act and a female Vice-President show this commitment. However, more work is needed to fully realize these goals.
The AfD competition is part of the British High Commission’s ‘Ghana Gender and Equalities Month initiative.’ This annual campaign occurs in March to inspire young women in Ghana while supporting Sustainable Development Goal 5: Gender Equality.
From March to December, all six winners will participate in mentorship engagements organized by various missions and organizations. They will serve as Community-Based Ambassadors advocating for gender equality within their communities.
The British High Commission collaborated with several youth and women's rights organizations this year. Partners included Power to Girls Foundation, Fulani Youth Association of Ghana, CAMFED, Plan Ghana, Amnesty International, UNFPA, PAYDP, Eclectic Love, African Women Leaders Network (Ghana Chapter), and Affirmative Action Youth Coalition.
