In a surprising turn, NPP Ashanti Regional Chairman Bernard Antwi Boasiako, known as Chairman Wontumi, remains detained. One name keeps coming up: Bryan Acheampong.
Acheampong is the Minister for Food and Agriculture. He has played a key role in efforts to secure bail for Wontumi.
Lawyer Appiah Kubi, Wontumi’s legal counsel, confirmed Acheampong's involvement. He noted that Acheampong submitted high-value property documents to help the process.
“I’m very grateful to Honourable Bryan Acheampong,” Kubi said. “He provided documents worth more than required.”
Acheampong's support shows concern for party unity during this crisis. His intervention comes at a crucial time before the upcoming elections.
Wontumi is a significant figure in the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP). His detention by the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) raised concerns among party members.
While some insiders struggled to reach him, public anxiety grew about Wontumi’s wellbeing. There was noticeable silence from influential party figures.
Lawyer Kubi assured that Wontumi is healthy and receiving care. The main issue now is a legal technicality delaying bail.
“Unknown to me, there was an application to frustrate our efforts,” he explained. “We’ll address it on Monday.”
EOCO officers are set to inspect the properties offered as sureties. Acheampong's actions underscore both the seriousness of the bail application and Wontumi's support within certain party circles.
