Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the former vice president, is the NPP's presidential candidate for 2024. He expressed hope that if given another chance, the NPP will improve.
He apologized to Ghanaians for the party's shortcomings. Dr. Bawumia acknowledged that while the NPP accomplished much, it also made mistakes.
He stated that the party has learned from its errors and aims to do better in the future. Speaking in London, he said, “The NPP did a lot of work, but we did not get everything right.”
Dr. Bawumia emphasized his personal apology on behalf of the party and government for their failures. He believes they can succeed if given another opportunity.
Additionally, Dr. Bawumia announced plans to elect the NPP's 2028 presidential candidate by January next year. He noted that electing their 2024 candidate in November gave John Mahama an advantage.
Mahama had already been campaigning as the NDC candidate at that time. Dr. Bawumia mentioned that internal divisions hindered reconciliation within their party after those elections.
He explained, “We elected our presidential candidate a bit late... Mahama was already ahead.” This left little time for reconciliation before starting their campaign.
Now, he said they are working on a proposal to complete all elections by January at the latest. This would allow them three years to prepare for the 2028 elections and focus on reconciliation efforts across constituencies.
