Central Regional Minister Eduamoah Okyere Ekow Panyin urged security officers to be strong. He wants them to fight illegal mining in the region.
His call follows the recent death of a police officer. The officer drowned in the Offin River at Assin Asaaman.
The minister visited the Central North Regional Police Command in Assin Fosu. He expressed condolences for Constable John Kwabena Dogbe, who died on April 2, 2025. Dogbe drowned while trying to arrest illegal miners and remove their equipment.
During his address, the minister encouraged police officers to continue their efforts. He acknowledged the challenges but emphasized the importance of fighting illegal mining activities.
“I was saddened by this loss,” he said. “But seeing your determination lifts my spirits.” He urged officers not to be discouraged by this tragedy.
Additionally, he suggested targeting sponsors of illegal mining operations. These sponsors are often not present at mining sites.
Illegal mining has caused significant damage in northern Central Region. Authorities warned that flooding disasters may increase due to these activities.
