A devastating fire broke out on Thursday night at Kasoa-Columba Junction. It destroyed five commercial container shops in the Awutu Senya East Municipality. The loss of goods is estimated to be worth millions of Ghana Cedis.
Eyewitnesses reported that the fire started around 8:30 p.m. It burned for more than two and a half hours. Local residents worked hard to control the blaze before firefighters arrived.
The affected shops included a provision store, a dressmaking shop, a pedicure salon, a hairdressing salon, and a bag shop. All were completely consumed by the flames.
Residents made several distress calls to local fire stations. These included Kasoa, Budumburam, Weija, and Dansoman. However, none could respond quickly due to malfunctioning fire tenders.
Eventually, a team from Anyaa arrived at the scene. By then, significant damage had already occurred. Preliminary investigations suggest the fire may have started in the provision shop.
An electrical fault is suspected as the cause of the blaze. However, this has not been officially confirmed yet.
Class News reporter Samuel Addo spoke with eyewitnesses about the incident. They described it as heartbreaking and called for better emergency response systems in the area.
