CAPHA Applauds Gov't’s bold nutrition commitments at N4G Summit

The Coalition of Actors for Public Health Advocacy (CAPHA) has praised the Ghanaian government. They commend the government's renewed commitment to maternal and child nutrition. This follows the announcement of the 2025 Nutrition for Growth (N4G) Commitments at a global summit in Paris.

CAPHA supports the government's ambitious targets. These targets align with CAPHA's advocacy campaign launched in December 2024. The campaign urged policymakers to address nutrition challenges like stunting, anaemia, low birth weight, and poor dietary diversity.

CAPHA welcomed Commitment 1's targets. These include halving stunting in children under five and reducing anaemia in women by 50%. The goals also aim to cut low birth weight by 30% and increase exclusive breastfeeding rates to 70%. CAPHA stated, “These are bold targets aligned with World Health Assembly Nutrition Goals.”

The coalition also applauded Commitment 7. This commitment focuses on addressing micronutrient deficiencies through evidence-based interventions. A key highlight is incorporating multiple micronutrient supplements (MMS) into routine antenatal care. CAPHA noted that this could significantly improve maternal and fetal health outcomes.

In a "progressive shift," Commitment 5 proposes extending maternity leave from 12 to at least 18 weeks. CAPHA emphasized that this would support exclusive breastfeeding and enhance postnatal recovery for mothers.

Additionally, CAPHA commended Commitment 2. This commitment aims for full implementation of Ghana’s National Food-Based Dietary Guidelines. It includes public education campaigns, professional training, eliminating industrial trans fats, and adopting nutrition labeling systems.

While praising these commitments, CAPHA stressed the need for action. They urged the government to ensure timely implementation backed by adequate funding. Commitment 9 allocates at least USD 6 million annually for essential nutrition commodities.

CAPHA stated, “We call on the government to move beyond declarations.” They emphasized that strong intersectoral coordination will be vital for achieving these targets.

The coalition reaffirmed its support for the government’s nutrition agenda. They pledged to continue advocating for maternal and child nutrition as a central part of national development efforts.
