CDM questions credibility of committee probing petitions against Chief Justice

The Centre for Democratic Movement (CDM) has serious concerns about the committee investigating Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo. They believe it is politically compromised.

The CDM argues that the committee's makeup undermines its impartiality. They stated, “The investigative committee is marred by political affiliations and past controversies.”

They specifically questioned the independence of Mr. Daniel Domelevo, Justice Gabriel Pwamang, and Prof. James Sefah-Dzisah in this sensitive matter.

The CDM noted that having one appointee from the previous government, Justice Asiedu, does not balance the committee’s bias.

“This lone balance does little to counter the perception that the body favors Executive interests,” they said.

The group referenced international guidelines like the UN Basic Principles on Judicial Independence. They also mentioned the African Commission’s Principles on Fair Trial to support their claims.

According to CDM, these principles emphasize impartial and constitutionally sound disciplinary processes.

They have called for the committee to be dissolved and reformed with truly independent members who are politically neutral.

The statement warned that failing to do so could harm Ghana’s domestic legitimacy and democratic reputation abroad.
