The Centre for Democratic Movement (CDM) has called for a national response. This follows the U.S. imposing a 10% tariff on Ghanaian exports.
On April 9, 2025, the group issued a strong statement. They described the tariff as a threat to many livelihoods. This includes cocoa farmers, textile workers, and small businesses.
The CDM emphasized that this is not just a trade issue. It affects people's daily lives and could increase unemployment. They warned of potential foreign exchange shortfalls.
The tariff relates to Ghana’s 17% average tariff on U.S. goods. The CDM argues it is unjustified under the African Growth and Opportunity Act (AGOA). AGOA allows Ghana duty-free access to the U.S. market.
The group questioned if the U.S. had revoked AGOA benefits formally. They stated that applying a blanket tariff may contradict AGOA's spirit if benefits remain intact.
Finally, the CDM called for high-level diplomatic intervention. They urged Ghana’s leaders to respond with clarity, legality, and unity.
