A new agenda aims to improve gender representation in media in Ghana and Côte d’Ivoire.
This initiative follows a two-year project focused on gender equity and women's empowerment. It was organized by Canal France International (CFI) and the Media Foundation for West Africa.
The “Equal Voices” project targeted gender inequalities and stereotypes in the media.
Selected journalists and media organizations received training on gender-sensitive reporting. They learned how to write articles that respect women's perspectives.
Sulemana Braimah, Director of the Media Foundation for West Africa, emphasized the need to end gender stereotypes. He called for a more inclusive media that represents all voices.
Braimah expressed optimism about creating an equitable media environment. He mentioned ongoing discussions at MFWA to continue this work.
Jocelyn Grange, Africa Director for CFI, stressed the importance of highlighting issues affecting women and marginalized groups.
At the project's conclusion, four out of eight participating organizations were recognized for their efforts.
Radio Soleil from Côte d’Ivoire won first place and received 2,000 euros. A1 Radio from Ghana came in second place.
The Ghana Broadcasting Corporation unit in Kumasi secured third place. Daloa FM from Côte d’Ivoire received an Encouragement Prize for its initiatives.
