The Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Bernard Antwi Boasiako, known as Chairman Wontumi, will appear before the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) today. This is scheduled for Monday, 26 May 2025.
His appearance follows an unsuccessful arrest attempt by National Security operatives and police on Friday, 23 May.
Many NPP supporters gathered at his residence to protest the attempted arrest. The crowd grew throughout the morning, expressing anger at the heavily armed security personnel present.
The reason for the attempted arrest has not been disclosed. However, Chairman Wontumi has assured officers he will comply with their invitation.
He plans to present himself to the CID voluntarily on the specified date.
Wontumi’s lawyer, Kwame Adom Appiah, spoke to Citi News about their cooperation with police. He emphasized that Wontumi is committed to democracy and will not evade authorities.
“He has investments in Ghana and won’t run away,” Appiah stated. “If you want him any time or day, you can find him.”
Appiah also mentioned they have done nothing criminal and are not afraid of engaging with authorities.
In response to public criticism of the attempted arrest, Deputy Interior Minister Ebenezer Okletey Terlabi defended security agencies' actions. He insisted their approach was within their mandate.
