CJ's removal: Minority Leader demands live broadcast of proceedings

The Minority Leader in Parliament, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, has made a strong appeal. He wants any committee hearings on the Chief Justice's removal to be public and broadcast live. He believes transparency is vital for Ghana’s judiciary.

Afenyo-Markin expressed serious concern about a political attempt to unseat the Chief Justice. He claims judges are being promised rewards for their support.

“They have their eye on the judiciary to get rid of the Chief Justice,” he said. “They go personal, promising judges: ‘If you support, you will be favoured.’”

He warned judges to resist these pressures and unite for judicial independence. “Today it is Tokornu; tomorrow it may be you,” he noted.

Afenyo-Markin questioned the credibility of those pushing for the Chief Justice’s removal. He doubted the legitimacy of their petition process.

“If you call the petitioners, where are they? Are they ghosts?” he asked. “Can they even read their own petition?”

On Joy FM’s Super Morning Show on May 2nd, Afenyo-Markin urged that proceedings be open and televised. “I pray that this so-called committee hearing is done in public,” he said.

He acknowledged that there is a constitutional provision for private hearings. However, if the Chief Justice wants a public hearing, it should happen.

“Though there is that provision in the Constitution, if the CJ says she wants it public, it should be public,” he asserted.
