The Ghana Bar Association (GBA) has called for strict adherence to the rule of law. This comes as constitutional processes begin regarding Chief Justice Gertrude Torkonoo's fate.
Three individuals submitted a petition to President John Dramani Mahama. They are seeking the removal of the Chief Justice. The petition was sent to the Council of State, which found a prima facie case.
A five-member committee was formed to investigate the matter. As a result, the Chief Justice has been suspended pending the outcome.
In a statement, the GBA stressed the importance of upholding constitutional principles during this process. They recognize Article 146(6) and (10) regarding removing the Chief Justice.
The GBA noted that the matter is currently sub judice. They hope all involved will follow the Rule of Law throughout these proceedings.
The Association urged all stakeholders to consider Article 296 of the 1992 Constitution when exercising discretion. They expect even those with minor roles to act responsibly.
"Justice comes from the people of Ghana and is administered by our Judiciary," added their statement.
