Akosua Manu, a former NPP parliamentary candidate for Adentan, has raised concerns about Ghana’s justice system. She warns it is at risk after the suspension of Chief Justice Gertrude Araba Esaaba Sackey Torkornoo.
Manu spoke on Channel One TV’s Breakfast Daily on April 23. She believes recent events indicate a political agenda to undermine judicial independence. The suspension is not an isolated incident but part of a plan to reshape the judiciary.
“It is just the first domino effect,” she stated. She added that while Chief Justice Torkornoo is not the main target, others will be affected too. This includes members of the Electoral Commission and Supreme Court judges.
President John Dramani Mahama announced her suspension on April 22. This followed a prima facie case based on three separate petitions. The action was taken under Article 146(6) of the 1992 Constitution and with Council of State consultation.
Manu argues this move sets a dangerous precedent for political manipulation of the judiciary. “They will replace them with their people,” she warned. She believes justice will be compromised, affecting the country’s conscience.
Her comments reflect growing concerns about politicization in Ghana's judiciary. Manu urged Ghanaians not to dismiss these developments as unimportant or distant threats. “They are coming for you,” she cautioned.
As discussions continue, Manu's remarks highlight fears over potential erosion of judicial independence and credibility in Ghana.
