Legal practitioner and political analyst Amanda Akuokor Clinton has raised concerns about Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo. She believes Torkornoo may not survive the ongoing impeachment proceedings. Clinton cites limitations in Ghana’s current constitutional framework.
On JoyNews’ Newsfile programme on Saturday, May 24, she discussed this issue. Clinton stated that the 1992 Constitution makes it hard for judicial officers to challenge impeachment processes. “It is true that she might not survive this process under this constitution,” Clinton said.
She noted that many legal efforts to stop the impeachment inquiry have failed. Justice Torkornoo is facing removal due to a petition against her. President John Dramani Mahama has suspended her, following Article 146 of the Constitution.
Torkornoo has filed a Supreme Court application challenging some justices' participation in the inquiry. She raises concerns about their impartiality.
Amanda Clinton, who holds an MSc in African Politics and leads Clinton Consultancy, emphasizes the need for constitutional reforms. She believes these changes are necessary for Torkornoo's chances of success in this process.
