Nii Lantey Vanderpuye has sparked debate about Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo. He suggested her public image may differ from what is said in private.
Vanderpuye is the National Coordinator of the District Road Improvement Programme (DRIP). He acknowledged the Chief Justice's respectable public persona. However, he hinted at troubling reports within legal circles.
“I have a lot of respect for the Chief Justice,” he said on Channel One TV. “Sometimes she portrays an angelic face; other times, it’s different.”
He added, “All that glitters is not gold.” His comments come as the Chief Justice faces petitions questioning her conduct. Vanderpuye believes these matters should follow constitutional processes, not public speculation.
His statement highlights a contradiction between perception and alleged reality. “She is not as saintly as some perceive her to be,” he noted.
Vanderpuye emphasized that he would not prejudge her character. He hopes that what he has heard about her behavior is untrue.
By balancing respect and suspicion, Vanderpuye's remarks reveal challenges faced by judicial figures. While calling for calm and due process, his statements introduce doubt into public discourse. This complicates the narrative surrounding the Chief Justice during a sensitive political time.
