Lawyer and human rights advocate Gloria Ofori-Boadu has called for calm. She urges a renewed commitment to democratic principles. She warns against actions that could undermine Ghana’s constitutional order.
Speaking on Newsfile on JoyNews, Mrs. Ofori-Boadu reflected on Ghana’s democracy. She emphasized that the current system is more than just constitutional. It embodies the ideals of constitutional liberal democracy, protecting human rights and civil liberties.
“We are jumping the gun,” she said. “Ghana is now in a constitutional liberal democracy.” She noted that simply calling it "constitutional" limits its scope. In the past, Ghana had a different form of democracy.
Now, we have a system based on human rights principles. These include the right to be heard and freedom of expression. All these freedoms are enshrined in our Constitution.
She stressed the importance of constitutionalism in Ghana. The freedoms enjoyed by Ghanaians are legally protected. They include the right to speak, assemble, and be heard. These rights must be fiercely safeguarded.
