CJ’s impeachment process politicised; creates a bad scene – Prof. Appiagyei-Atua

Associate Professor Kwadwo Appiagyei-Atua from the University of Ghana's School of Law is concerned. He is worried about the politicisation of Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo's impeachment process.

He warned that this situation could damage public confidence in the judiciary.

On JoyNews’ Newsfile programme, he discussed these issues on Saturday, May 24th. Prof. Appiagyei-Atua noted that the judicial process should be impartial and constitutionally guided. However, it has been overshadowed by political manoeuvring.

“There have been many twists and turns,” he said. He pointed out that the petitions regarding the Chief Justice’s position have become politicised.

He believes this public perception of bias erodes trust in the rule of law. It also sets a worrying precedent for future judicial matters.

According to him, such politicisation undermines the independence and integrity of the judiciary.

“It creates a very bad scene,” he stated. He urged political actors and state institutions to let the constitutional process unfold without interference.

Prof. Appiagyei-Atua emphasised that preserving judicial impartiality is vital for Ghana’s democracy.
