Private lawyer Martin Kpebu has suggested that Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo should resign. He believes this would benefit Ghana’s democracy. A prolonged investigation could harm public confidence in the judiciary.
Kpebu stated that while Torkornoo could be cleared, the damage might be irreversible. He expressed concerns about dragging the matter into the public eye. This could lead to significant harm to the judicial system.
He warned that ongoing investigations might bring up past issues of judicial corruption. These controversies could reopen old wounds and further erode trust in the judiciary. "This is going to open a can of worms," he said.
Kpebu emphasized that a resignation would help the country move forward quickly. It would also prevent escalating tensions surrounding the situation. "A resignation would be in order so that we move on quickly," he added.
His remarks followed President John Mahama's suspension of Chief Justice Torkornoo. The President set up a committee to investigate petitions against her. This decision complies with constitutional provisions after consulting with the Council of State.
President Mahama cited Article 146(6) of the Constitution for this action. This article requires a committee if there is sufficient evidence against a judge. The statement indicated that grounds exist for further inquiry into Torkornoo's conduct.
