CJ sues Mahama over suspension, challenges legality at Supreme Court

Suspended Chief Justice Gertrude Sackey Torkornoo has taken legal action. She is challenging her suspension by former President John Dramani Mahama.

On May 21, 2025, she filed a writ at the Supreme Court. Her legal counsel, Godfred Yeboah Dame, is a former Attorney-General. Justice Torkornoo seeks declarations to nullify her suspension.

She wants the court to declare that President Mahama's decision was arbitrary and unconstitutional. She argues it violated her right to a fair trial.

Justice Torkornoo claims her right to a public hearing has been violated. She asks the court to affirm her entitlement to such a hearing.

Additionally, she requests the court acknowledge her right to waive an in-camera hearing. She believes this waiver is within her legal privileges.

Torkornoo also wants Justices Gabriel Scott Pwamang and Samuel Adibu-Asiedu barred from the investigation committee.

She argues that Justice Pwamang is unfit due to previous rulings favoring one of the petitioners. This prior involvement compromises his neutrality.

Regarding Justice Adibu-Asiedu, she claims he is disqualified as well. He served on a Supreme Court panel related to the impeachment process.

Torkornoo believes his role on the committee creates a conflict of interest.
