CJ suspension: 3-2 ruling gives me comfort to consider fresh legal challenge if... - Ekow Assafuah

Vincent Ekow Assafuah, the MP for Old Tafo, plans to appeal. He wants a review of the Supreme Court's recent ruling. The court dismissed his request for an injunction against Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo's suspension.

On May 6, the Supreme Court ruled 3-2 against Assafuah’s motion. This decision allows the process for the Chief Justice's suspension to continue. President John Mahama suspended her based on advice from the Council of State.

Assafuah believes the close vote shows that his arguments have merit. He feels encouraged by the split decision.

The court will explain its ruling on May 21, 2025. Assafuah stated that two judges agreed with him while three disagreed. This gives him comfort about his legal reasoning.

He plans to file for a review if he is unsatisfied with the court's explanation. He shared these thoughts on JoyNews' The Pulse after the ruling.

Former Attorney General Godfred Dame also commented on the case. He believes that despite losing, there is legal merit in Assafuah’s challenge.
