Kwaku Ansa-Asare, former Director of the Ghana School of Law, praised Acting Chief Justice Paul Baffoe-Bonnie. He commended him for following legal precedent in the Supreme Court case involving Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo.
Ansa-Asare noted that Justice Baffoe-Bonnie's leadership was sound and constitutional. He stated, “The acting Chief Justice has really followed precedent.” He explained that since 1992, the Supreme Court has ruled that the Chief Justice can empanel judges. This practice has been consistently upheld in various cases.
His remarks came after former Attorney General Godfred Yeboah Dame raised an objection. Dame challenged Baffoe-Bonnie’s role in presiding over the case, calling it "unprecedented" and "improper." He argued this was due to its direct connection to Chief Justice Torkornoo.
The Supreme Court dismissed this objection unanimously after a brief recess. This allowed the case to continue under Justice Baffoe-Bonnie's leadership.
The current panel includes Justices Henrietta Mensa Bonsu, Yonny Kulendi, Amadu Tanko, and Ernest Gaewu.
In another development, the Supreme Court narrowly dismissed an application to halt proceedings on petitions against Chief Justice Torkornoo. The ruling was made with a 3–2 majority on Tuesday. Justices Mensa Bonsu and Gaewu dissented from this decision.
The majority held that the petitions should proceed without delay. The full reasoning behind this decision will be released on May 21, 2025.
