Sammy Gyamfi is the Acting Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Gold Board (GoldBod). He has criticized the Ghana Bar Association (GBA) for its recent statement. The GBA claimed that President's suspension of Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo violates Article 296(c) of the Constitution. Gyamfi called this claim “ridiculous, mischievous, and disgraceful.”
On April 24, the GBA issued a call for adherence to constitutional procedures. This was in response to the process for removing Chief Justice Torkornoo. Gyamfi spoke on Joy News’ Newsfile on May 3. He defended the President’s actions and accused the GBA of hypocrisy.
He argued that their position is not a legal opinion but a partisan narrative. Gyamfi believes it aims to undermine the current administration. He stated, “The claim by the GBA...is mischievous, ridiculous and disgraceful.”
Gyamfi added that he also has an opinion about their stance. He described their opinion as “ridiculous and disgraceful.” He contended that the GBA's intervention lacks constitutional grounding.
Instead, he suggested it reflects support for the New Patriotic Party (NPP). Gyamfi accused them of backing NPP narratives without basis in law. He said they have exposed themselves as aligned with NPP interests.
He also challenged the GBA’s consistency on similar issues in the past. Gyamfi pointed out their silence during actions taken under former President Nana Akufo-Addo's administration. Specifically, he mentioned Justice Paul Uuter Dery’s suspension along with three other judges.
“Where was the GBA when President Akufo-Addo suspended Justice Dery?” he asked. Gyamfi asserted that GBA often remains silent when NPP is in power but criticizes NDC when they govern. “They lose their voice when NPP is in office but regain it with NDC,” he concluded.
