Majority Leader in Parliament, Alexander Kwamena Afenyo-Markin, spoke on Joy FM's Super Morning Show. He urged the country to move past "retaliatory politics." This plea comes amid discussions about removing the Chief Justice.
Afenyo-Markin shared a personal story from 1996. His stepfather, a mason foreman, faced political retribution. He was demoted and reassigned as a watchman after elections. This happened because he supported the New Patriotic Party (NPP) during the PNDC regime.
Afenyo-Markin recalled visiting his stepfather while attending St Augustine’s. He questioned whether he should carry that pain forever. “Should I blame Zanetor [Rawlings] for my father’s suffering?” he asked.
He emphasized that political victimization has long affected Ghana. Afenyo-Markin called on his colleagues to rise above personal grievances. He stressed the importance of focusing on the greater good.
He stated, “The time has come for us to leave behind retaliatory politics.” He acknowledged individual issues but highlighted governance as a priority. That is where he wants the nation to focus its direction.
