CJ suspension: Mahama’s actions threaten rule of law and stability - Minority

Ghana’s Minority Caucus in Parliament is very concerned. They criticize what they call “blatant disregard for legal processes.” They also mention “judicial intimidation” related to the Chief Justice's suspension.

The Caucus highlights ongoing dismissals of public servants based on political alignment. They believe these actions destabilize the nation and harm democratic values.

The Minority stated, “These actions represent a direct assault on our democracy.” They are worried about reports of a potential removal of the Electoral Commission Chairperson and her deputies. They see this as creating a “crisis of legitimacy.”

Regarding mass terminations of public sector workers, the Caucus condemned this trend. They called it economically unjust and socially destabilizing.

“It is unacceptable for such actions to take root,” they said. The statement emphasized that political affiliations should not lead to dismissals in a democracy.

They urged citizens to take urgent civic action. “We must rise in unity and resolve,” they declared. “The time to act is now.”

Echoing calls from Parliament, they warned that silence will not be forgiven during democratic backsliding.
