The Minority Caucus in Parliament has issued a bold statement. They support political parties resisting what they call “a direct assault” on Ghana’s democracy.
The unrest centers around the recent suspension of the Chief Justice. This action is widely condemned as unlawful. There are also politically motivated dismissals of public servants.
“The country is indeed tense,” warned the Minority. They believe executive actions are leading to a dangerous path.
A nationwide demonstration is planned for Monday, May 5, 2025. It is organized by opposition and independent groups, including the NPP, LPG, NDP, and PNP.
The Minority stated that this protest is “not just a political action.” It is a constitutional imperative to alert Ghanaians and the international community about threats to judicial independence and democracy.
“These actions abuse the power and trust given to the executive,” they said.
Reports indicate widespread dismissals of civil and public servants. These terminations appear to be based on perceived political affiliation.
The Minority called these dismissals “a blow to national stability.” They noted their negative impact on young professionals’ integrity and economic justice.
There are also troubling allegations about plots against the Electoral Commission Chairperson. The Minority warned this could “plunge Ghana into a crisis of legitimacy.”
In conclusion, the Minority Caucus reaffirmed solidarity with all Ghanaians protecting democratic values.
“This is not about partisanship; it’s about principle,” they emphasized.
They urged citizens to “rise in unity” as defenders of the Republic.
Their statement ends with a strong call to action: “We cannot ignore these dangerous patterns. The time to act is now.”
