CPJ Marks Mahama’s 100 Days with Call to Protect Press Freedom and End Impunity

On April 17, 2025, President John Dramani Mahama marked his 100th day in office. The Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) issued an appeal to his government. They urged him to uphold press freedom and pursue justice for past abuses.

In a letter dated the same day, the CPJ called for media rights to be prioritized. They emphasized that accountability should be a key part of his leadership.

The letter urged swift investigations into attacks against journalists. It also called for reforms to laws that criminalize journalism. Additionally, it asked that journalists' devices not be seized or searched during their work.

The CPJ expressed concern about a climate of impunity for crimes against journalists in Ghana. They highlighted the unresolved murder of journalist Ahmed Hussein-Suale Divela in 2019 as an example.

The letter stated that Ghana's laws have been misused to criminalize the press. The CPJ encouraged President Mahama to listen to local advocates calling for legal reform.

While Ghana has been seen as having an open media environment, recent years show troubling trends. There have been increased intimidation, legal harassment, and physical threats against journalists without consequences.

The group urged President Mahama to take bold action against these trends. They want him to restore confidence in Ghana’s commitment to democratic values and ensure journalist safety and freedom moving forward.
