CUTS International has raised concerns about sudden price increases by Telecel. They describe this practice as unfair due to limited communication with consumers.
Recently, Telecel Ghana announced higher service prices. On April 25, they revealed that the One Family Large Plan would cost GHS570 for 485GB. This new price takes effect on April 28, just two days later.
CUTS International noted that this is not an isolated case. A month ago, MultiChoice Ghana Ltd, which operates DStv, gave subscribers less than a week’s notice of a price hike.
In a statement, CUTS International emphasized the importance of consumer rights. They believe these rights are essential for a healthy market environment. This is especially true for prepaid services that renew regularly.
The organization pointed out a troubling trend in Ghana’s telecommunications sector. Service providers often give limited notice before changing prices. While CUTS acknowledges that operators may need to adjust pricing, they stress the need for timely communication.
They specifically called for transparency regarding price changes in prepaid subscription models. In response to these issues, CUTS International urged the National Communications Authority (NCA) to act.
They want the NCA to create clear guidelines to protect consumers. CUTS International suggests that telecom and pay-TV providers should give at least 30 days' notice before any price adjustments are made.
