Cabinet will meet on sanitation budget decentralisation soon - Mahama

President John Mahama announced that the Cabinet will meet soon. They will finalize plans to decentralize the sanitation budget. Each district will manage its own sanitation systems.

During his Thank You Tour in Dodowa, he emphasized local accountability. The new policy aims to improve sanitation across the country.

“Cabinet will soon meet on the decentralization of the sanitation budget,” President Mahama stated. He explained that this policy empowers Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Assemblies (MMDAs). They will take full charge of sanitation with proper funding and clear responsibilities.

He also mentioned that sanitation performance will affect District Chief Executives' positions. “Cleanliness will become a key performance indicator for MMDCEs,” he said. This measure will determine if they remain in office or are removed.

The President highlighted the government's approach to allocate more resources locally. These resources can effectively address daily challenges in communities.

“The Finance Minister directed that 80% of revenues from the District Assemblies Common Fund should go directly to MMDAs,” he noted. This means more funds for assemblies to implement development projects and effective sanitation programs.

On a broader environmental agenda, President Mahama discussed flood control in Greater Accra. He stated it would be integrated into the national climate resilient strategy.

“We know Accra deserves a clean and resilient environment,” he said. This integration aims for a cleaner and safer city for all residents.
