Cabinet will meet on sanitation budget decentralisation soon - Mahama

President John Mahama announced that the Cabinet will meet soon. They will finalize plans to decentralize the sanitation budget. Each district will manage its own sanitation systems.

During his Thank You Tour in Dodowa, he explained the new policy. It aims to improve sanitation through local accountability.

“Cabinet will soon meet on this decentralization,” President Mahama stated. He emphasized that Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Assemblies (MMDAs) will take charge of sanitation. They will receive proper funding and clear responsibilities.

He also mentioned that sanitation performance will affect District Chief Executives' positions. Cleanliness will be a key performance indicator for MMDCEs.

“This is crucial; it will determine if they stay or go,” he said. The government wants to allocate more resources locally for effective management.

“The Finance Minister directed that 80% of revenues from the District Assemblies Common Fund should go directly to MMDAs,” he noted. This means more funds for assemblies to implement development projects and sanitation programs.

On a broader environmental agenda, President Mahama discussed flood control in Greater Accra. The flood control master plan will be part of the national climate resilient strategy.

“We know Accra deserves a clean environment,” he said. Integrating these plans ensures a safer city for all residents.
