Call off June 9 strike – Rashid Pelpuo appeals to GRNMA

Dr. Rashid Pelpuo, the Minister for Employment, Jobs, and Labour Relations, has made an appeal. He urged the Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwives Association (GRNMA) to reconsider their planned strike. The strike is scheduled for Monday, June 9, 2025.

The GRNMA announced this intention on Wednesday, May 28. They cited unresolved concerns over conditions of service as the reason. However, Dr. Pelpuo warned that a strike could disrupt the healthcare system.

He emphasized the importance of dialogue among all stakeholders. "When we embark on a strike, it affects society," he said. He noted that every sector's actions have direct effects on development.

Dr. Pelpuo stressed that employers and stakeholders should work together to avoid strikes. He stated that both the government and health authorities must listen to nurses' concerns.

Meanwhile, a joint statement was issued by other unions on the same day. The National Association of Registered Midwives Ghana and others distanced themselves from the planned action. They disagreed with GRNMA's interpretation of a previous collective resolution.

In response, GRNMA criticized these dissenting unions. They accused them of undermining efforts for better working conditions. The Association argued that these groups failed to prioritize nurses' welfare in Ghana.

Health Ministry reports nearly 100,000 trained health workers are unemployed.
