Call off planned strike – Health Ministry appeals to GRNMA

The Ministry of Health has urged the Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwives Association (GRNMA) to reconsider its planned strikes. They cited ongoing discussions and risks to patient care nationwide.

In a statement on May 28, the Ministry expressed shock at GRNMA's press conference. The association announced strikes due to delays in implementing their Conditions of Service.

The Ministry acknowledged that these revised Conditions were set for 2024 but have faced delays. To resolve this, both parties agreed to form a joint committee. This committee will include representatives from GRNMA, the Ministry of Health, and the Ministry of Finance.

The Ministry highlighted a significant achievement from 2015 under President John Dramani Mahama. That year marked the introduction of structured Conditions of Service for health workers. The current administration aims to improve nurses' welfare further.

However, the Ministry condemned using patient care as leverage in negotiations. They stated that it is inappropriate to use patients' lives in this manner.

The Ministry urged GRNMA leaders to prioritize dialogue instead of disruption. They appealed for the association to focus on patients’ interests and return to negotiations for the health sector's benefit.
