Cape Coast Mayor vows to revive abandoned Atta Mills Library

The Mayor of Cape Coast, Mr. George Justice Arthur, has made a promise. He will work with the Ghana Library Authority and the Cape Coast Metropolitan Assembly (CCMA). Their goal is to reopen the long-abandoned Atta Mills Presidential Library.

This library was commissioned in 2016. It was meant to be a hub for research, education, and tourism. However, it has fallen into disrepair since then.

Mr. Arthur is committed to restoring this facility. He believes it can become a valuable national asset again.

In a media address, Mr. Arthur shared his vision for Cape Coast. He aims to improve the declining standard of education in the city. “Cape Coast should be known for quality education,” he stated.

He emphasized that transforming Cape Coast needs teamwork. He called on media, traditional leaders, assembly members, and other stakeholders to join forces. Together, they can build a thriving and culturally vibrant coastal city.

His vision also includes boosting economic growth and enhancing residents' quality of life. Additionally, he announced plans to partner with local Members of Parliament. They aim to provide scholarships for talented but financially disadvantaged students.

On sanitation issues, Mr. Arthur mentioned new initiatives coming soon. The Assembly will introduce a "house-to-house refuse collection system" to keep the city clean.

An award scheme will recognize the cleanest electoral areas as well. This initiative encourages assembly members and residents to maintain good sanitation practices.

The Mayor also revealed plans for a Public-Private Partnership (PPP). This partnership aims to establish an engineered landfill site in Cape Coast.

“One major cause of filth is waste disposal at unapproved sites,” he noted. To address this issue, the Assembly plans to collaborate with the Judicial Service.

They will establish a dedicated sanitation court in Cape Coast. This court will work with the Waste Management Department and Environmental Sanitation Unit to enforce sanitation laws strictly.
