Cape Coast airport not needed; invest in roads – Asenso-Boakye

Francis Asenso-Boakye is the Member of Parliament for Bantama. He is also a former Minister for Roads and Highways. Recently, he dismissed the idea of building an airport in Cape Coast. He believes investing in road infrastructure is better for Ghana’s economy.

Asenso-Boakye stated that a modern highway from Accra to Takoradi would be transformative. Travelers could make the journey in just an hour and a half. This improvement would significantly boost tourism in the country.

He spoke during discussions on a GHS 3.2 billion budget for the Ministry of Roads and Highways. Asenso-Boakye questioned the feasibility of an airport in Cape Coast. This project was promised by the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) before the 2020 elections.

Analysts have expressed skepticism about the airport proposal, citing economic concerns. Instead, Asenso-Boakye highlighted the benefits of building concrete roads. He urged the government to focus on this more sustainable option.

He explained that concrete roads last up to 50 years, unlike asphalt roads, which last only 15 years. Investing in concrete roads would save money over time, he noted.
