Cargill, ICI celebrate graduation of 60 youth from cocoa-growing communities

Cargill, in partnership with the International Cocoa Initiative (ICI), hosted a graduation ceremony. This event celebrated 60 adolescent apprentices who completed a year-long vocational training program.

The ceremony took place at the Bekwai Chief’s Palace forecourt. The apprenticeship targets 15 to 17-year-olds in cocoa-growing communities. These youths often lack access to further education and skills training.

Participants received practical training in trades like carpentry, tailoring, and glass fabrication. This initiative helps youth gain income-generating skills for self-reliance and community resilience.

This program is part of Cargill’s Child Labor Monitoring and Remediation System (CLMRS). It aims to identify, prevent, and address child labor in the cocoa supply chain.

Max Essoh Latte, Managing Director of Cargill Ghana, emphasized human rights. He stated that improving farmers' livelihoods safeguards the future of cocoa. The program empowers young people with opportunities for success.

Graduates received official TVET certificates from the Ministry of Education. They also received tools to start their careers. Government officials, community leaders, and parents spoke at the ceremony about shared responsibilities in building strong communities.

Mike Arthur, Country Director of ICI, praised the initiative's impact on child labor and poverty reduction. He noted that investing in vocational training helps adolescents become economically independent.

Samuel Apana, Sustainability Operations Manager at Cargill, discussed future plans. He mentioned that these graduates are just the first batch of over 200 apprentices enrolled. More youth will join in coming months as part of a broader strategy.

Local leaders like HRH Oyeadieyie Basaoe Kwadwo Armah III commended Cargill's efforts. They urged other private sector actors to support youth development as well.

Cargill is dedicated to providing food and agricultural solutions sustainably. With 160,000 team members worldwide, they focus on innovation for community prosperity and consumer well-being.
