Catholic Bishops to hold national memorial mass in honour of Pope Francis

The Ghana Catholic Bishops’ Conference (GCBC) has planned activities to honor Pope Francis. He died peacefully on Monday, April 21, 2025. The Vatican announced his death after he battled several illnesses. Just a day before, he celebrated Mass on Easter Sunday.

Most Reverend Matthew Kwasi Gyamfi signed the statement. He is the Catholic Bishop of Sunyani and President of the GCBC. The Church in Ghana calls for unity in prayer and remembrance for the late Pontiff.

A National Memorial Mass will be held at a later date. All bishops, priests, religious members, and lay faithful are invited to attend.

Archdioceses, dioceses, and parishes are encouraged to organize local Requiem Masses. They should also hold special Holy Hours in honor of Pope Francis. These events should focus on prayerful reflection about his teachings.

Schools and seminaries may host prayer services or discussions. This will help the faithful appreciate Pope Francis's life and legacy. The GCBC urges all Church members to pray for his soul and for the global Church as it prepares to elect a successor.

“May the Lord welcome him into eternal joy,” the statement concluded. Pope Francis was the 266th Pontiff of the Roman Catholic Church. His legacy includes simplicity, dialogue, and concern for marginalized people.
