The Ghana Catholic Bishops’ Conference has announced plans to meet with Honourable Alexander Kwamena Afenyo-Markin, the Minority Leader and Member of Parliament for Effutu, following his recent declaration that he is both a Catholic and a Freemason.
The Catholic Church, led by Most Rev. Matthew Kwasi Gyamfi, maintains that Catholicism and Freemasonry are incompatible and has emphasized that Afenyo-Markin will need to choose between the two.
The Church’s stance is based on the belief that Freemasonry’s doctrines conflict with core Christian teachings, particularly on salvation, morality, and the role of Christ.
This position, which forbids Catholics from joining Freemasonry, is rooted in the Church's long-standing opposition to the organization.
