Caution, not clearance – Agbana breaks down the president’s decision on Sammy Gyamfi

Former NDC youth leader Edem Agbana has criticized the media. He claims they misrepresent President Mahama’s actions in the Sammy Gyamfi dollar gift saga.

Agbana stated, “There is a difference between caution, clearance, and pardon.” He clarified that President Mahama issued a caution, not a pardon or clearance. This explanation came during a panel discussion on Good Morning Ghana.

He noted that media misreporting has caused confusion about the disciplinary action taken. According to Agbana, caution is a recognized sanction for minor misconduct in many places, including Ghana.

“Even in schools and institutions, caution is a formal warning,” he said. He emphasized that Gyamfi’s caution reflects the high standards expected from appointees.

Agbana believes the situation stems from public expectations rather than legal violations. “People are angry not because there was any law breached,” he explained. “They expect more from the NDC. That’s fair—but let’s not twist the facts.”

He also opposed calls for Gyamfi’s removal, citing double standards. “The NPP has no moral authority to lead this charge,” he asserted.

While acknowledging public frustration, Agbana stressed clarity and fairness are essential. He highlighted the need to distinguish political ethics from legal violations.

“The president acted appropriately,” he concluded. “The gentleman apologized out of respect for Ghanaians, even though he broke no law.”
