Cedi appreciation bad for Mahama gov’t 24-hour economy – Richard Ahiagbah claims

Richard Ahiagbah is the Director of Communications for the New Patriotic Party (NPP). He recently claimed that the cedi's appreciation is harmful to John Mahama’s 24-hour economy program.

Ahiagbah argued that a weak cedi would benefit this program more. He stated that celebrating a stronger cedi supports an import-dependent economy.

He emphasized that Ghana needs sustainable jobs, not just a strong currency. A production-led 24-hour economy should be the focus, he said.

During an appearance on Good Morning Ghana, Ahiagbah explained his views further. He noted that a strong cedi makes imports expensive and hinders exports.

He compared Ghana's situation to the US-China trade issues, where currency manipulation affects exports. Ahiagbah questioned the government's strategy if they aim for a 24-hour economy.

He criticized the Mahama government for shifting focus from production-led plans to operating passport offices in shifts. He expressed confusion over this change and reiterated the need for real job creation.

Ahiagbah concluded by stating that Ghana does not need a stronger cedi right now. Instead, he believes sustainable employment should be prioritized for citizens.
