Cedi appreciation can be attributed to NPP’s work – Former MP

Dr. Dickson Adomako-Kissi, a former MP for Anyaa-Sowutuom, commented on the cedi's recent appreciation. He believes this improvement is due to the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) efforts.

The Ghana cedi has been gaining against major currencies, especially the US dollar. As of May 19, 2025, it trades at GH¢12.3 per dollar.

Adomako-Kissi stated, “Current cedi appreciation can be attributed to the work we (NPP) did.”

In response, Fifi Fiavi Kwetey, General Secretary of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), criticized the NPP. He accused them of being desperate for credit regarding cedi stability.

Kwetey claimed that while the NPP seeks praise now, they were responsible for its previous decline. He said they "burnt the house" but want applause for bringing water.

Kennedy Agyapong, a former MP and NPP flagbearer aspirant, also weighed in on the issue. He argued that recent cedi gains are not due to economic experts in Ghana.

Agyapong described the appreciation as temporary. He explained that global demand for dollars has decreased recently.

At an event at Central University on May 15, he said it’s simple economics: supply exceeds demand when competition is low.

He cautioned against attributing these changes to interest rates or other factors. Agyapong emphasized that it reflects broader issues in the world economy.
