Richard Ahiagbah, the Director of Communications for the New Patriotic Party (NPP), criticized the government. He said the strengthening of the cedi makes a 24-hour economy policy unfeasible.
On Metro TV's Good Morning Ghana, he explained that a strong cedi raises export costs. This makes Ghana's products less competitive globally. Such a situation contradicts the government's goal of boosting economic growth through exports.
Ahiagbah stated, "If your currency is strong, you must aim to be import dependent." He added that stronger cedis make imports cheaper but raise export prices. "That’s basic economic thinking," he noted.
He questioned the government's objectives with this currency strength. "What is the end game for strengthening the cedi?" he asked. He wondered if it aimed to make Ghana more import-dependent.
Ahiagbah emphasized that job creation should be a priority. He argued that focusing on cedi strength distracts from production goals. "Our problem is jobs," he said, highlighting concerns about employment.
He also criticized government claims of economic success. "They haven’t done anything," he asserted. "They’re just speaking English to us," he concluded.
